Here's what we have been up to this week:
Math: We focused our attention this week on the relationship between multiplication and division. We practiced both using shortcuts, strategies, and fact family triangles! On Monday we get to learn a game called Baseball Multiplication!
Writing: We are moving from writing personal narratives to personal essays. To begin to feel comfortable with how to begin an essay, we have been reading other personal essays, deciding what the "big idea" was, and picked out the evidence from the paragraphs that supported the "big idea". We will be doing this a lot as a class, then we will move into doing this activity independently, and finally the kids will begin writing essays on their own!
Reading: Our narrative non-fiction unit continues with learning how to summarize by using the "Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then" approach. It has the kids pinpointing the main character, what they wanted (a goal, an item, etc.), what gets in the way, how does the main character respond, and what happens at the end. We have done a few of these together and the kids are getting very good at it!
Science: Presently the kids are studying light, which includes shadows, why shadows change, prisms, refraction and reflection. If you have any books about lights, you child can bring them in to share with the class!
Another busy weeks comes to a close! Have a great weekend : )

December PTA News
- This Friday morning, you can donate your bottles and cans to the 5th grade camp fundraiser by leaving your bag of donations on the Royal & Morrison corner lawn. This is only a small donation by an individual, but adds up nicely. The 5th grade parents would greatly appreciate your help.
- We currently have 181 PTA members and are shooting for 200. We're soooo close! If you haven't joined, please do so ASAP. PTA does so much for all of our students - being a part of it is something that everyone should do!
- Thank-yous go to the many, many teachers that are supporting the terracycle effort. Your terracycle bins are coming!!!
- Food for fundraising is coming! The week of January 21, there are a variety of opportunities to eat good food and have someone else donate to Pattengill. On Monday, the 21st of January it will be Uncle Andy's Pizza (yummy take-out ). Tuesday, the 22nd, will be Bagger Dave's from 5:00 until 9:00. Wednesday, the 23rd, will be Noodles from 4:00 until 9:00. Thursday, the 24th, plan on an Atomic Dawg night. Friday evening, the 25th, is Movie Night at Pattengill, and pizza will be sold. I am planning to eat out that entire week!
- This Friday (the 7th) a few people are needed to help move the Caring and Sharing donations on a trailer that has been donated for the purpose. This will happen at 3:30 and should be very quickly done, depending on the number of volunteers. If you can help, please show up at the Oakshire buzzer door and we will make short work of it!
- New PTA board members are needed. Many of the posts do not require more than a few hours per week (although the amount of time may vary from one month to another). This is a great way to support the PTA and your school. The post of President requires 2-3 hours per week and the job includes presiding over the meetings and various other coordination and communication jobs. The President-Elect supports the President and does various other jobs that amount to 1-2 hours per week. The Vice President serves at the coordinator for the Hot Dog Roast and the Ice Cream Social. Committees that run the two events report to the VP. The Secretary takes the minutes at each meeting. The post of Treasurer includes all PTA cash operations/reporting and banking responsibilities; this job requires 3-5 hours per week with Sept./Oct. and May/June being the most active. Please think about taking on one of these jobs - this is a great way to network with other Pattengill parents and provide a fabulous service for our school community.

Sight Words
Happy Monday!
I would like to let you know that I have posted a couple of new links on my school website. The first is a list of first- and second-grade sight words that students should already be familiar with and spelling correctly in their writing and spelling tests. The second post is a list of third grade sight words that the kids should be getting more familiar with and spelling correctly by the end of third grade. Also, there are activities and flash cards you can print out and use at home! Copy, paste, and use however works best at home!

Week of 11/5-11/9 2012
Happy Friday Families!
The week was short but we accomplished a lot!
Reading:
We finished "Because of Winn-Dixie" and the kids loved the book! We made many connections to the main character, Opal, and enjoyed reading about her triumphs and tragedies. The kids did much reflecting in their reader's notebooks and did some sharing as well!
Writing:
As a class, we reviewed areas of paragraph writing that I noticed needed attention after grading their work. We payed close attention to word use (ex: over using words like "fun", "cool", and "awesome"), adding a title to our work, and transferring our ideas from the hamburger organizer to a paragraph on lined paper. The kids are enjoying it and are getting into the swing of it!
Math:
Our unit begins with studying measurement. We worked on measuring to the nearest whole, half, and quarter-inch, feet and yards. We also learned about the metric system and measured using millimeters, centimeters, decimeters, and meters. We measured and compared the length of objects found around the classroom. Next week we will continue to look at measurement as we work with area and perimeter.
Social Studies:
The kids have been working on their MI brochures and after giving them 6 days to work on them, they are completed and have been scored. I am going to have the kids look over their brochures and scored rubric on Monday and both pieces will be shared with you during your child's conference!
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Week of 10/22-10/26
Last week we were busy, busy, busy! Take a look at just a few things we worked on:
Social Studies: The students are wrapping up the first unit in our Michigan studies curriculum by creating a brochure that will be sure to attract the attention of prospective tourists! Each student was given a rubric of what needs to be in their brochure and how it will be graded. The kids are really enjoying working on these!
Reading: We began Book Clubs on Monday. The groups and books were chosen by me. This first go-around will focus mostly on the social aspect of book clubs (teacher expectations, group expectations, noise level, conversations, etc.).
Spelling: The "Words Their Way" program is in full swing! Spelling tests were on Friday and I will have them graded and given back to the students by tomorrow, Tuesday the 30th. The students are graded in three different areas as you will see on the top of the test paper. The three areas graded are handwriting, spelling, and punctuation/grammar. Grades will range from 1-4 and align with report card grades. "1" means area of concern, "2" is beginning, "3" is developing, and "4" is secure. For the spelling portion of the grading, spelling words and correct spelling of grade-level sight words are assessed.
Follow this link to view grade-level sight words: http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch-words-all-alpha-printable.pdf
Feel free to print it out!
Conferences are right around the corner! Please make sure you turn in your blue conference sign-up sheet by this Friday, November 2nd!
I hope your week is off to a great start!

Words Their Way
Good afternoon!
Last week I sent home a note stating that we would be beginning our spelling program this week. Today, all the students were given their first word list and word sort. Each Monday the kids will be given two lists (containing the same words). One list will be sorted out in class and put in their "Word Sorts" folder. The other list will be taken home so that they may use it to practice their words at home. Attached to the letter were two pages of fun ways to practice spelling at home.
The list that your child has started on is based on an assessment from the same company. This program targets spelling patterns, instead of generating a random list of "third-grade words". There is a pattern and flow to the lists, some skills build upon one another, some are independent of other lists.
Thank you for your patience during the first couple of weeks of the program as we work out all the details!

Junior Achievement
Today was the first of five visits from Mrs. Connolly, our Junior Achievement instructor. J.A. is a free program that sends a volunteer to your classroom to teach and lead the class in fun activities all based on grade-specific social studies curriculum. Mrs. Connolly will be teaching us all about our city which includes concepts like: economic development, city zones, city planners, careers, jobs, skills, consumers, producers, entrepreneurs, and interdependence. All of these concepts are linked to our Michigan Economics unit.
Today, the kids talked about different zones in a city; business, residential, industrial, multi-purpose, and farming. The kids compared and contrasted each zone and specified buildings they would expect to see in each area.
We look forward to J.A. next Wednesday!!

MEAP Week #1 - Check!
Happy Friday Families!!
Wow! Your children, my students, they really rocked it out this week! Most got plenty of sleep and were ready to go the minute they walked through our classroom doors! The positive energy and attitudes were quite catchy and we ended the MEAP's this week feeling triumphant! Bring on week #2!!!
Not only were we "MEAP-ing" this week, we also kept busy in other areas of the curriculum, as well. Here are a couple of areas we worked on this week:
Writing
The kids were re-introduced to the paragraph during writer's workshop. We discussed the three parts of a paragraph (topic sentence, three details, closing sentence) and we worked on putting a paragraph together using a "hamburger paragraph" graphic organizer. It is literally the outline of a hamburger with a bun, three items in the middle, and a bottom bun. This organizer really helps the kids to see the five different sections they need in their paragraph. We filled in a hamburger together with the topic, "Why people should visit Michigan". The kids then worked on their own hamburger with the topic, "My favorite holiday". Today we worked on moving our paragraph from the hamburger to lined paper. This is something that we will be practicing and building on all year.
Math
This week we had our first unit test and have moved on to Unit 2. We learned a new game called "Rolling to 100" and reviewed fact families and fact triangles. Many kids were stumped when the equal sign and addition/subtraction sign switched spots (ex: instead of 7+3=10, they saw 10=7+3), it got especially confusing when it was in subtraction form. When the kids have to fill in the problem and are not paying attention, they input the numbers in the wrong way. This is something we practice all year, but I told them they need to pay attention to all those little details!
Social Studies
We watched a power point slide show that another teacher in the district put together. It was all about Michigan landmarks. This kids and I had a blast looking at the wonderful pictures, reading all the information about each area, and answering trivia questions about what we read!
In other news...
Today I had a group discussion about behaviors I have seen outside the school building at dismissal that I have become concerned about. For example yesterday, I saw a child climb up a tree on the front yard of the school and hang from a branch by his legs. Also I saw three boys tackling/wrestling each other on the front lawn of the school. Both of these unsafe behaviors are not allowed on school property during school hours and are not allowed on school property before or after school hours. Our main priority in bringing this subject up to parents is purely for the safety and well-being of your children. If you could help reinforce this message at home too, we all would really appreciate it. I thank everyone in advance for contributing to the safety of our kids and of our school grounds. We couldn't do it without your help.
Have a fabulous weekend! Andy, Oein, and I are heading up to LegoFest on Sunday. I hope you all are doing something fun, as well!

MEAP begins tomorrow!
Hello Families!
Just a reminder that we will begin MEAP testing tomorrow, first thing in the morning. We have two parts to finish tomorrow, one in the morning and the second part in the afternoon. Please make sure that your child gets a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast in the morning! There will be no break for snacks until everyone is finished with their test.
Give your child a positive send off so they come in with an "I can do this!" attitude!

Book It!!
Good afternoon!
Today we began our participation in a program called "Book It!" It is a reading program sponsored by Pizza Hut. Each month (October-March) your child will come home with a calendar. For every night that they read their minimum of 20 minutes, they get to color in the corresponding date on the calendar. At the end of every month, the calendars are turned in (with parent signature). If your child turns in their calendar, they will receive a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut! In March, when the program ends, any student who has turned in their calendar every month will receive a special prize from me for being a superstar reader!!
Every student was able to color in the squares for October 1-3, since we just received the materials today : )
If you have any questions about the Book It program, or anything else, feel free to contact me!

Planners
Hello Families!
I wanted to let you all know that I have changed the student's planner procedure when getting ready at the end of the day. Up until now, I have written homework assignments on the overhead and your child was expected to copy what they needed to finish into their planner and then get ready for home. Unfortunately, today I noticed that there were quite a few students who were choosing not to write any assignments in their planner or chose to add only the reading portion. As a result, I will now be checking planners at the end of each day. Your child will write in their assignment and bring their planner over to me to "check out". After I review their planner, I will mark the day with a star, which let's you know your child checked out with me that day. If there is no star, your child did not check-out with me.
I am hoping that this is only temporary and we can go back to demonstrating responsibility when adding assignments to planners.
Thank you : )

Happy Friday!
We had another busy week here in 3rd grade! Our reading assessments are almost complete and we are moving full steam ahead in math, writing, reading, and social studies! Here is a glimpse of our focus this past week:
Reading: We have been discussing and practicing the characteristics of great readers; choosing a good reading attitude, recommending good books, noticing when we are confused, going back and rereading, etc. Next week we will begin our new book-shopping schedule and your child will be refreshing their book bins weekly!
Writing: We continue our focus on "seed stories" or "small moments" when writing personal narratives. Increased use of personal details in our stories was also targeted this week.
Math: Counting money, dollar notation, finding patterns in numbers were a few key areas we reviewed this week. Next week we will be taking our first unit review test and Unit 1 assessment!
Social Studies: As we continue our study of the geography of Michigan, we focused on the different landforms found in our state. Key words from our lesson include landforms, peninsula, and island. We also talked about relative and exact location and discussed the difference between the two. We used a compass rose to describe the relative location of Michigan in the U.S. and that is an area we will be reviewing often.
**Reminder** Pattengill's Fun Run is next week on Friday, October 5th! Make sure your child is wearing comfortable clothes and shoes!
Enjoy your weekend!

Week #2
Week #2 was quite a busy week! We dived right into our 3rd grade curriculum, beginning Reader's Workshop, Writer's Workshop, Everyday Math, and Social Studies. Here is a snapshot of what we are learning in each area:
Reader's Workshop
We are discussing choosing "just right" books, making connections and meaning when reading our story, focusing on what is going on, and not reading on "auto-pilot"!
Writer's Workshop
Strategies have been introduced to the students in case they find themselves searching for something to write about. A couple of strategies include making a list of important people, choosing one, and write about important experiences with them; making a list of important places they have been to, choose one and write about it.
Math
In math we are reviewing topics such as name collection boxes, data collection and tally charts, telling time, and using our student reference books.!
Social Studies
We begin our study of Michigan with a look at the geography of our beautiful state. We are learning key words that have to do with geography and using that knowledge when discussing Michigan.
Our class has also begun working on practicing cursive, something that will continue through the year.
I would like to thank all the families that were able to make it to Curriculum Night! I know how busy you all are and appreciate you dedicating time to come meet with me and check out your child's new room!
Reminder: There is still time to donate $4.00 towards the purchase of the Scholastic News magazine for your child. Thank you in advance for your support!
Have a wonderful weekend and I will see your child on Wednesday, September 19th!

Happy Friday!
We did it! Our first week of school was a success! I've been having a great time getting to know everyone, sharing stories and interests, and getting our classroom routines started.
A couple of pieces of information:
1. We have started our Mad Minute program. Mad Minute is a daily, timed math practice testing each child's fluency in addition, subtraction, and beginning multiplication. When a Mad Minute sheet comes home with a star, it means your child has passed that level and will move on to the next the following day.
2. Our class has two snack times built into our schedule. One in the morning and another in the afternoon. Please make sure that any snack brought to school is a healthy one. Great snack ideas include cheese and crackers, fruit, veggies, yogurt, granola bars, pretzels, etc. Also, your child is more than welcome to bring in a water bottle, which should be filled with water only (no juice or soda, please!).
I look forward to meeting you at Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 12th at 6:30pm!
Have a great weekend : )

The First Day of School!
Hello Families!
The first day back was so amazing! I am so excited about what a great class I have this year! It sure was hot today, but despite the heat we were able to check many beginning-of-the-year duties off our lists. We talked about classroom behavior expectations, procedures, jobs, and we were able to label our classroom organizers! We had a very busy day today and I am looking forward to what tomorrow brings!
Happy First Day!

We talked about classroom behavior expectations, procedures, jobs, and we were able to label our classroom organizers! We had a very busy day today and I am looking forward to what tomorrow brings!
Happy First Day!
